Vision & Values

Our school culture is anchored by core values that guide how we learn, interact, and grow together as a community.

Our Vision

"The ākonga are at the heart of all that we do"

Mokoia School Values

The Mokoia Way

At Mokoia Intermediate, our values are more than words—they are the foundation of who we are and how we live, learn, and grow together. Rooted in our local history, culture, and community, our values guide the decisions we make, the relationships we build, and the aspirations we hold for ourselves and others.

Through Whakaiti, Manaakitanga, Whanaungatanga, Wairuatanga, Upoko Pakaru, and Kōmaitanga, we strive to develop young people who are respectful, caring, connected, resilient, and confident. These values are woven through every aspect of school life, helping our students to become thoughtful learners, positive leaders, and active contributors to their communities.

Whakaiti

Humility

Whakaiti teaches us the importance of respect, self-awareness, and putting others before ourselves. It is about recognising that everyone has something valuable to contribute and approaching life with kindness and an open mind. Through Whakaiti, our students learn to celebrate the success of others, listen carefully, learn from those around them, and act with integrity and respect.

Manaakitanga

Caring for Others and Doing What is Right

Manaakitanga is about showing kindness, compassion, and respect in everything we do. It also encourages our students to develop a strong sense of ethics by understanding the difference between right and wrong and making positive choices.

At Mokoia, we expect students to care for others, act with honesty and fairness, take responsibility for their actions, and contribute positively to our school and community. Manaakitanga reminds us that how we treat people matters just as much as what we achieve.

Whanaungatanga

Relationships and Belonging

Whanaungatanga is about building strong, meaningful relationships and creating a sense of belonging. We believe that students thrive when they feel connected to their peers, teachers, whānau, and wider community.

Through Whanaungatanga, students learn the importance of teamwork, trust, inclusion, and supporting one another. It helps create a school where everyone feels valued, accepted, and part of the Mokoia whānau.

Wairuatanga

Spirit and Identity

Wairuatanga acknowledges the unique identity, values, beliefs, and strengths that each person brings to our kura. It encourages students to develop a strong sense of self, understand where they come from, and appreciate the cultures and perspectives of others.

Through Wairuatanga, we nurture wellbeing, purpose, reflection, and a sense of connection to the world around us.

Upoko Pakaru

Resilience

Upoko Pakaru is about perseverance, determination, and the courage to keep going when challenges arise. We encourage our students to embrace learning opportunities, take risks, learn from mistakes, and never give up on their goals. Through resilience, students develop confidence in their ability to overcome obstacles and understand that growth often comes from stepping outside their comfort zone.

Kōmaitanga

Triumph

Kōmaitanga is about striving for excellence and taking pride in personal achievement. It encourages students to set high expectations for themselves, work hard, and celebrate their growth and success.

At Mokoia, triumph is not simply about being the best—it is about becoming the best version of yourself. Through Kōmaitanga, students learn to value effort, embrace challenges, and pursue their goals with confidence and determination.
