Sports and EOTC

Sport at Mokoia Intermediate

At Mokoia Intermediate, sport is much more than competition – it is an opportunity for students to develop confidence, resilience, teamwork, leadership, and a lifelong love of physical activity.

We are proud to offer a wide range of sporting opportunities that encourage every student to get involved, whether they are trying a sport for the first time, representing their house, competing for their school, or striving for excellence at the highest levels of intermediate sport.

Opportunities for Everyone

Students at Mokoia have access to a diverse range of sports throughout the year, with opportunities to participate in local, regional, and national competitions. We encourage all students to be active and involved, fostering a culture where participation, enjoyment, and personal growth are valued alongside achievement.

Our students regularly compete in sporting events and competitions throughout Rotorua and the wider Bay of Plenty, representing Mokoia with pride, determination, and sportsmanship. From team sports to individual pursuits, there are opportunities for every learner to find a sport they enjoy and develop their skills.

AIMS Games

Mokoia Intermediate is proud to participate in the annual AIMS Games, New Zealand’s premier sporting event for intermediate-aged students. This elite competition brings together thousands of young athletes from across the country to compete at the highest level of intermediate school sport.

Students have the opportunity to represent Mokoia in a variety of sports, challenging themselves against some of New Zealand’s best young athletes while creating lifelong memories, friendships, and experiences. Participation in the AIMS Games reflects our commitment to providing pathways for students to pursue excellence and achieve their personal best.

Building More Than Athletes

Through sport, our students learn valuable life skills including perseverance, commitment, leadership, communication, and teamwork. They learn how to set goals, overcome challenges, celebrate success, and support others.

Our coaches, teachers, volunteers, and whānau work together to create positive sporting experiences where every student feels valued, encouraged, and supported to succeed.

The Mokoia Way

Whether competing on the local fields of Rotorua, across the Bay of Plenty, or on the national stage at the AIMS Games, Mokoia students are encouraged to represent themselves, their whānau, and their school with pride, respect, and integrity.

At Mokoia Intermediate, we believe sport has the power to inspire, connect, and transform young people. We are committed to providing opportunities that allow every student to participate, achieve, and thrive.

Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC)

At Mokoia Intermediate, we believe some of the most powerful learning happens beyond the classroom walls. Our Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) programme provides authentic, hands-on experiences that challenge students, strengthen relationships, build resilience, and connect learning to the real world.

Through a wide range of outdoor, cultural, environmental, and adventure-based experiences, students develop confidence, independence, teamwork, leadership, and a deeper understanding of themselves, their community, and the environment around them.

Camps, Noho & Alternative Education Adventures

One of the highlights of a student’s time at Mokoia is the opportunity to participate in our major EOTC experiences. Every alternate year, students take part in either a school camp, noho, or an alternative education adventure programme designed to provide memorable learning experiences outside the traditional classroom setting.

These experiences challenge students to step outside their comfort zones, develop resilience, strengthen friendships, and create lasting memories. Whether exploring the outdoors, engaging in cultural experiences, or participating in adventure activities, students learn valuable life skills while building confidence and independence.

Guardians of Mokoia Island

As part of our commitment to local curriculum and environmental sustainability, our Year 8 students have the unique opportunity to visit the iconic Mokoia Island in the heart of Lake Rotorua.

Working alongside conservation groups and local experts, students take part in rat trapping and environmental restoration projects that contribute directly to protecting the island’s native wildlife and ecosystem. Through this hands-on conservation work, students develop an understanding of kaitiakitanga (guardianship), environmental responsibility, and the importance of protecting our natural heritage for future generations.

These experiences provide a powerful connection to the history, culture, and environment of our region while allowing students to make a meaningful contribution to an important local conservation project.

Learning Through Experience

Our EOTC programme extends beyond camps and major events. Throughout the year, students participate in a variety of learning experiences that may include environmental studies, cultural visits, sporting opportunities, leadership development, community projects, and curriculum-based excursions.

These opportunities allow students to apply classroom learning in authentic settings, ask questions, solve problems, and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Growing Confident, Connected Learners

At Mokoia Intermediate, EOTC is about more than simply leaving the classroom. It is about creating meaningful experiences that inspire curiosity, foster personal growth, strengthen relationships, and develop capable young people who are ready to embrace future challenges.

Through adventure, exploration, service, and discovery, our students build the skills, confidence, and values that help them become active contributors to their communities and lifelong learners.
