Strategic Plan 2026 – 2028

Our Strategic Plan sets a clear, purposeful direction for Mokoia Intermediate School over the next three years. It outlines our commitment to fostering an environment where every student can discover their unique potential, embrace challenges, and succeed.

Our Core Mission

"We are Limitless! We are Passionate! We are Mokoia!"

At the Heart of Our Plan

Our strategy is built upon a simple, powerful vision: The needs of our ākonga are at the heart of all that we do. Developed in close consultation with our community, whānau, and staff, this plan focuses on two major pillars:
  • Igniting a Passion for Learning: We deliver a meaningful, relevant curriculum deeply rooted in our local context, history, and mātauranga Māori, ensuring learning connects with our students’ lives.
  • Cultivating Respectful Relationships: We believe that positive relationships are the absolute key to effective learning. Our teaching team is dedicated to knowing how each individual student learns best, maintaining high expectations, and providing a deeply caring environment.
Guided by our school values, this strategic framework ensures Mokoia Intermediate remains a place where belonging, identity, and academic growth go hand in hand.

Attendance Management Plan: Every Day Counts

At Mokoia Intermediate, regular school attendance is a key priority and a vital foundation for our ākonga to reach their full educational potential. Following the Ministry of Education’s guidelines, we define “regular attendance” as being at school at least 90% of the time.

Our 2026 Target

In 2025, our kura experienced a termly average of 57% regular attendance alongside a challenge with chronic absenteeism. To change this trajectory, our Board of Trustees and Leadership Team have set a decisive target to lift regular attendance to 70% and drastically reduce chronic absences down to just 2% by the end of 2026.

The Mokoia Way Action Plan

To achieve these goals, we have developed a comprehensive Attendance Management Plan (AMP) and STAR (Stepped Attendance Response) Procedure. Our proactive, supportive approach focuses on breaking down barriers to attendance and keeping whānau closely connected.
Our daily plan includes:
  • Real-Time Tracking & Communication: Utilizing Hero to monitor attendance data weekly. This allows us to send live updates, threshold alerts, and direct letters home so families are always informed of attendance concerns early on.
  • Removing Barriers for Whānau: Actively supporting families through home visits and providing targeted assistance with essentials like uniform, stationery, or food (kai) when needed to make coming to school as easy as possible.
  • Celebrating Success: Fostering a positive school culture by introducing exciting incentives, such as “100% Attendance Days” and fortnightly 95%+ attendance prize draws to reward excellent or improved commitment.
  • Community & Iwi Partnership: Working hand-in-hand with our local contributing primary schools, outside support agencies, and Taumata o Ngāti Whakaue to create a cohesive community network that supports students through vulnerable transition periods.
Through clear expectations, early interventions, and a strong partnership with our community, we look forward to seeing fewer unjustified absences and a school full of engaged, thriving lifelong learners.
