Term 3 Week 3 / 7th August 2026
Our Mission: We are Limitless! We are Passionate! We are Mokoia!
Our Vision: The needs of ākonga are at the heart of all that we do at Mokoia Intermediate!

From across the desk of the principal- Whaea Ally

Kia Orana / Tēnā koutou katoa e te whānau.

A warm welcome to our parents, caregivers and whānau.

This week, we proudly celebrated Cook Islands Māori Language Week, honouring the rich language, culture, identity and heritage of our Cook Islands Māori whānau.
The theme for this year is:
“Me kite koe i te tuatua i to’ou reo tupuna, e turanga rangatira tena nō’ou no te uki amuri atu.”
“With our language as our foundation, we will embrace the future.”

Language connects us to our identity, culture, whakapapa and future generations. At Mokoia Intermediate, we celebrate the many languages, cultures and identities that enrich our kura and strengthen our sense of belonging.

We enjoyed learning, participating and celebrating throughout the week as we recognised the importance of protecting, nurturing and passing on our heritage languages to future generations.

Last week, we welcomed the Education Review Office (ERO) to Mokoia Intermediate. It was a pleasure to visit classrooms alongside the ERO reviewers and spend time around our school. Together, we experienced a strong sense of positivity, engagement and respect. Our ākonga were actively involved in their learning and demonstrated pride in being part of the Mokoia whānau.

The visit provided an opportunity to showcase the positive learning culture continuing to grow across our kura. We were proud to see ākonga engaging confidently in their learning, supporting one another and showing respect for their teachers, peers and school environment.

These observations reflect our Term 3 values of Whakaiti – Humility and Kōmaitanga – Sense of Achievement, which we continue to see through the way our ākonga learn, contribute and support one another. We look forward to receiving our confirmed ERO report and sharing its findings with our school community.

We have welcomed former Mokoia Intermediate students from Rotorua Boys’ High School, Rotorua Girls’ High School and Rotorua Lakes High School back to our kura. It has been wonderful to hear them share their experiences and talk with our Year 8 ākonga about the wide range of learning, leadership, cultural, sporting and extracurricular opportunities available as they transition to secondary school in 2027.

Their visits provided valuable insight and helped our Year 8 students begin thinking about their next steps with confidence and excitement. We are proud to see our former students returning to Mokoia and sharing their journeys, experiences and advice with the next generation of learners.

We look forward to continuing to support our Year 8 ākonga and their whānau as they explore their secondary school options and prepare for a successful transition beyond Mokoia Intermediate.

Three teams of our students recently competed at the RoboCup Nationals, while several of our sports teams proudly represented Mokoia Intermediate at the Super 11 Winter Tournaments.
Students competed in:
  • Boys’ Football
  • Girls’ Football
  • Hockey- 2nd place
  • Rugby
  • Netball
We are proud of the commitment, preparation and effort our students have shown. These opportunities develop teamwork, resilience, leadership, discipline and confidence.
Our students represented Mokoia with determination, sportsmanship and pride. We congratulate all those involved and thank the staff, coaches and whānau who supported them.

The Mokoia House Competition continues to build enthusiasm, connection and school spirit.
This week, students will take part in our House Netball Competition. We look forward to seeing everyone participate with energy, enthusiasm and pride. While competition brings excitement, we also look forward to seeing students encourage one another, celebrate effort and demonstrate positive sportsmanship.

As we move through Term 3, we encourage every ākonga to continue demonstrating Whakaiti and Kōmaitanga in the classroom, on the sports field and throughout our wider school community. Together, these values help create a school where every ākonga feels valued, supported and encouraged to grow, achieve and thrive.

Thank you to our parents, caregivers and whānau for your continued support of our ākonga, staff and school community. We look forward to working together throughout Term 3 and celebrating the many successes still to come.

Ngā mihi nui,

Whaea Ally
Acting Principal

      Important Mokoia Intermediate Board Pānui

Tumuaki/Principal Appointment – Community Consultation Update

The Board is progressing the recruitment process for our next Tumuaki/Principal, and we are now entering the consultation phase. This is where we gather the voices of our community to help shape the Person Specification and ensure the appointment reflects the aspirations of our whānau, staff, students, and iwi.

      Community Hui at Owhata Marae

We warmly invite all whānau to a community hui on Thursday 13 August 2026 – 5.30pm.
While not all of our whānau whakapapa to Owhata Marae, the Board wants to reassure our community that everyone is welcome. This hui is open to all parents and caregivers who wish to contribute their whakaaro/thoughts. Your voice is an important part of this process.

Multiple Ways to Share Your Voice

To ensure wide and equitable participation, consultation will take place in several formats:

      1. Whānau Surveys via Hero

A digital survey will be sent to all whānau through Hero this week and next. Hard copies will also be available in the school office for those who prefer paper-based feedback.

      2. Board Presence at Open Evening

Board members will be present at the Mokoia Intermediate Open Evening to capture the voice of whānau who are considering enrolling their tamariki for 2027. This ensures prospective families also have the opportunity to share their aspirations for school leadership.

      3. Surveys to Contributing Schools

Surveys will be sent to Tumuaki/Principal of our contributing schools to share with their staff to gather their professional insights and perspectives. This supports a broader understanding of the qualities and capabilities valued by educators who know our incoming students well.

      4. Staff and student voice

      • Staff – survey and face‑to‑face kōrero
      • Students – age‑appropriate survey led by teachers.

      Why This Matters

This kōrero directly informs the Person Specification, which guides the recruitment and selection process. Your feedback will help the Board identify:
      • What Mokoia Intermediate is doing well
      • Opportunities we should explore
      • The characteristics and qualities you want in our next Tumuaki/Principal
      • Any additional whakaaro/thoughts you believe the Board should consider

      Recruitment Timeline

Key milestones include: Indicative and subject to change.
      • Community consultation – early August
      • Person Specification finalised – late August
      • Application pack completed – late August
      • Advertisement published – late September
      • Shortlisting & interviews – October

We Look Forward to Hearing Your Voice

Whether through the marae hui, Hero survey, open evening kōrero, or contributing school feedback, your input strengthens our process and ensures the Board is guided by the aspirations of our community. Feedback will be treated respectfully and used to inform the appointment process.

      Ngā mihi

      Super 11 Netball

The girls had a great day away at Super 11 Netball. The schedule was demanding, with back-to-back games against strong opposition, but for us it was less about the results and more about building as a team in preparation for AIMS. Throughout the day we trialed new combinations, and it was exciting to see our teamwork, communication, and continuity continue to develop. We finished the tournament with a close 12–9 playoff loss to a strong Kaitao side, leaving plenty of positives to take into our AIMS campaign. A huge thank you to all of our whānau for your support throughout the day. Your encouragement on the sidelines was greatly appreciated. Well done team - an amazing group of girls who represented Mokoia with integrity, determination, and pride. Results:Won 10–7 vs IlminsterLost 20–7 vs Mount Lost 10–7 vs Taupō Lost 9–5 vs Otumoetai Lost vs Whakatāne Lost 12–9 vs Kaitao (Playoff for 9th/10th)The team finished 10th overall, placing ahead of Rotorua Intermediate and Ilminster. Thanks Marise and Shilani (coach and manager)

      Super 11 Boy Football

Great day, great team and great supporters .. and four seasons in one day The boys had a hectic schedule with 4 back to back pool games. They showed up and played great football to progress onto the semi finals. Game 1 vs Ilminster 3-2 win Game 2 vs Te Puke 3- 0 win Game 3 vs Otumoetai 0-0 draw (eventual winners… again )Game 4 vs Taupo 1-0 win Onto the Semi-final vs Mt Maunganui (5th game in a row) this was a cracker, the boys were up for this battle against a physical and rather chatty Mt Maunganui. We had many close chances in regulation to win but wasn’t to be - onto penalties Excitement, nerves and rain unfortunately we lost the shootout but that’s the reality of penalties. They did themselves proud nonetheless in a close semi final.3rd/4th playoff was vs Whakatane going down 5-0 the team were not ready for the quick turnaround from the shootout. Whakatane scored some beautiful goals. Awesome result- 4th from 10 teams Well done boys enjoy a well deserved rest tonight. You can all be proud of the way you played and your attitude throughout the tournament

      Super 11 Girls Football

We took young team with 9 year 7s captained by the more experienced Bella DellawayThe girls had a great day after an early start playing 5 games against much bigger and more experienced teams.Game 1 vs Illminster 0-0 draw Stand out Lucy SalisburyGame 2 vs Taupo 0-3 Loss - Stand out Milly DoveGame 3 vs Te Puke 0-1 Win - Stand out Freya Porthouse and Nikita SamvelyanGame 4 vs Mt Maunganui 5-1 Loss - Stand out Jessica Christoffersen and Bella DellawayThese results were enough to get us through to the 5th vs 6th playoff (there were unfortunately no pools for the girls so we didn't get a crossover game.We were matched against Taupo for this match and after being dominated by them in the first game the girls took control with a stunning through ball from Nikita to Bella who smashed it past the keeper. Awesome passing through our midfield by Anya Greyling, Nikita and Kyah Harvey kept ball possession but unfortunately for Mokoia Taupo struck back to go into the break 1-1. Mid way through the second half a goal snuck past Jessica Christoffersen who was outstanding in goal along with Lucy. Another Nikita and Bella combination ended with Bella hitting the crossbar with the ball bouncing straight down on the line (it wasn't judged a goal) she followed through and again hit the post. So unlucky... following another attacking play by Lucy a Taupo player reacted by extending her hand and stopping the ball in their goal box, again this wasn't called...Taupo hit a stunner to finish us off from long range. It was a awesome final match and great to see the girls improvement over the day. Stand out player Cassie Edkins for sitting on Taupo's playmaker and taking her out of the game despite the size difference.Special mention to Serene Stevens and Milly for your excellent defense all day long. Willow Grayling and Freya for running all day long! and Finally thank you to Summer Shoebridge even though you were not well you got out there in that freezing rain and ran your heart out.Looking forward to next year's battle!Well done Girls' awesome day and great team to coach. Thanks Hancine.

      Super 11 Hockey

The Mokoia hockey team started the tournament with 3 games in what we considered a particularly hard pool. After 1 win, 1 draw, 1 loss we placed 2nd in the pool so went on to play Rotorua Intermediate (who had placed 1st in their pool) in the semi finals. By this game the team was gelling, working well together, growing in confidence, so came out with a 4-1 victory. Onto the finals we went, against Taupo, the only team we had lost to in the pool games. Unfortunately they were a well oiled machine that were again too slick for us so we went down 5-0.5 games, 2nd place, only lost to one team, massive achievement, happy players, proud caretaker coach. Thanks Kate

      RUMAKI

Whiria te Tāngata and the symbolism of Te Whakapapa o te Harakeke.

      Te Whāinga - Our Vision.
Our inquiry for Term 3 brings together Pūtaiao, Hangarau, Mātauranga Māori, and kaitiakitanga through a real environmental challenge in our own backyard.
Together, our tamariki will investigate how traditional weaving knowledge and modern genetic science can contribute to restoring the health of our local roto.

      Our Driving Question.
How can science, hangarau, and Mātauranga Māori work together to understand, weave, and protect the whakapapa of harakeke and our connection to Te Roro o Te Rangi, Ōwhata Marae.
This kaupapa is uniquely Aotearoa. It combines traditional knowledge, contemporary science, te reo Māori, and environmental restoration in a way that is authentic and meaningful for our learners.

This isn't simply a weaving project.
The Uwhi will become an indigenous technology that will be placed into the lake to help suppress invasive weeds while contributing to the restoration of the lake's cultural and environmental health.
Tamariki will participate in three sessions each week, rotating through four specialist learning groups.

      Rōpū 1 – Raranga.
Students focus on weaving the structural framework of the ūwhi, learning traditional weaving techniques alongside tikanga with Whaea Sarah.
      Rōpū 2 – Harvesting.
Students harvest, prepare, and sort harakeke using appropriate tikanga while learning about sustainable resource management.
      Rōpū 3 - 4 The Science Lab.
(Pā Harakeke) EDNA - Using DNA in the Taiao.

      Tamariki begin their scientific inquiry.
They record observations, compare harakeke cultivars, investigate fibre strength, and begin making links between weaving structures and biological patterns that they'll explore further later in the term.
